Using musical activities and performances to help promote understanding of quantum concepts.

Using quantum concepts as a starting point for accessible and original musical expression.

Most people know the word ‘quantum’ from popular culture, but have little idea about what it means. This project will help people to understand the basics of what quantum physics is, and how it has been crucial to the development of much of the useful technology that we use today, such as electronics, lasers, atomic clocks, MRI scanners etc. Also, it is a fascinating area of cutting-edge science. Quantum computing is a priority area of current research in the UK and globally; people will be hearing more about it, so let's find ways to help them understand more about it.

Don't be Scared of the Quantum Cat

We are developing interactive workshops to illustrate quantum physical concepts and applications. We will use a range of means including games, performances, visualisations, music and sound, including elements of improvisation and hands-on experimentation for anyone to participate in. No musical skills or physics knowledge required.

This project is in development, with funding applications pending. Activities are expected to be available in the Spring of 2026. Please get in touch if you would like to know more.

This project is a collaboration between:
Erika Andersson - Professor of Physics at Heriot-Watt University
Matt Wright - Creative Producer/Director at Pianodrome, Edinburgh
Steve Summers - Creative Producer/Director at Noisy Toys

workshop activities

Follow the Boom to find the Audio Assault Buggy. Get your nose tested, electrocute your family and try out strange and noisy instruments.

Pioneers are brave thinkers who try new things and solve tricky problems in clever ways. Come and explore how amazing inventions and incredible technology have changed the world, and try out some ideas of your own with Noisy Toys on a wild sonic voyage!

Join the roaming Noise Technician in the National Museum of the Royal Navy Galleries, where the echoes of naval history meet the sounds of the future. The Royal Navy knows the power of sound – from ship horns to sonar. Now it’s your turn to take command! Learn how to rock a bass riff on a distorted rubber band or strum a melody on an egg slicer. Hot-wire a CD-ROM drive, make laser-blaster sounds with an amplified slinky, and experiment with feedback using balloons and contact mics.
